LABORATORY ASSISTANT
Colegio Jordán de Sajonia is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our science department and support the safe and efficient functioning of our laboratories.
Academic Background:
Technical degree in Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
Certification or formal training in GHS (Globally Harmonized System) will be highly valued.
Technical English proficiency (ability to read and interpret international GHS documentation is a plus).
Responsibilities:
Support daily laboratory operations, ensuring the safe handling of chemicals in accordance with the GHS.
Classify and label chemical substances and mixtures following international GHS standards to prevent safety risks.
Prepare and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to communicate physical, health, and environmental hazards.
Manage quotes and purchasing processes with suppliers, evaluating offers for laboratory materials and equipment.
Maintain accurate inventories of chemicals and verify proper storage and disposal procedures in line with GHS guidelines.
Collaborate in internal safety audits and support safe practices within the science department.
Assist teachers with student lab sessions, preparing materials and ensuring all activities comply with safety protocols.
Skills and Competencies:
Proactivity: Ability to identify and resolve potential laboratory issues before they escalate. Suggest improvements for classification, labeling, or safety procedures.
Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with suppliers, write clear quote requests, and report findings or incidents related to GHS.
Technical Proficiency: Basic knowledge of lab management software (e.g., MS Office, GSuite, inventory tools), operation of standard lab equipment, and familiarity with chemical safety regulations.
Soft Skills: Teamwork, attention to detail, strong safety orientation, and ability to work under pressure in dynamic environments.
Required Experience:
Minimum of 1 year of experience working with the GHS system, including classification of chemicals, understanding of standardized labels, and preparation or review of SDS.
Additional Requirements:
Strong commitment to professional ethics and strict compliance with health and safety protocols.
Knowledge of technical English is an asset, particularly for interpreting international safety documentation.
